ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIP

Climate Observers Partnership -

a coalition of civil society organizations dedicated to promoting respect for human rights and inclusive climate action in Azerbaijan.

OVERVIEW

Following the Bonn Climate Change Conference of 2024, against the backdrop of an unprecedented crackdown on independent media and civil society activists in Azerbaijan ahead of COP29, a number of local Azerbaijani and international NGOs established the Climate Observers Partnership – a coalition of civil society organizations dedicated to promoting respect for human rights and inclusive climate action in Azerbaijan.

As COP29 will be hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024, it offers a unique chance to harness the momentum of the global climate movement to foster solidarity with the Azerbaijani human rights activists, while the government holds 303 political prisoners in the country. It also provides an opportunity to use global attention to highlight and amplify the key civic space demands of the Azerbaijani community.

OUR MISSION

The campaign was launched during the Human Rights Council on its 56th session in the United Office in Geneva. Through this initiative, the Partnership aims to bring international scrutiny to the human rights situation in Azerbaijan, emphasizing that climate action cannot be separated from the fundamental freedoms of expression and association.

The Partnership aims to emphasize on the critical importance of free and independent civic space in advancing climate justice.
