Following the 56th Human Rights Session of Human Rights Council in United Nations Office in Geneva, Emin Huseynov has delivered a statement from the part of Institute for Human Rights on the Annual panel discussion on the adverse impacts of climate change on human rights.
He emphasized the importance of inclusivity and free participation of civil society organizations to promote adaptive social protection and uphold human rights against extreme weather and growing international tensions. "Inclusivity and the free participation of civil society organizations are crucial." stated Huseynov.
Looking ahead to COP29, there is an urgent need for the entire international democratic community to draw attention to and address Azerbaijan's suppression of civil society. The increase in political prisoners, many of whom are connected to the COP29 process, is a concerning development that requires immediate action. The global community must work to stop these repressive actions and ensure that civil society can participate freely and meaningfully in the climate dialogue.
"Azerbaijan and the UAE, as COP hosts, should respect freedom of expression and release all detained activists unconditionally," Huseynov urged. "There is no climate justice without human rights."
