On July 22th, former diplomat Emin Ibrahimov was arrested in Baku following stabbing allegations. Ibrahimov, on the other hand, denied any involvement and claimed he was arrested due to the criticism he raised against Azerbaijani authorities. The former diplomat’s lawyer, Agil Layij, reported that shortly before the arrest, Emin Ibrahimov was attacked by an unknown individual, in proximity to Khalglar Dostlugu metro station.
Subsequently, the former diplomat was arrested and taken to Nizami District Police Department in Baku. “At the station, they used a stun gun on Ibrahimov to force him to give up his phone code,” the lawyer reported. The Ministry of Internal Affairs, however, told the Turan News Agency a whole different story. According to the MIA Ibrahimov was taken into custody followed a heating argument with another man that resulted in the former diplomat stabbing his interlocutor. A case was consequently opened against Ibrahimov under the article “International Infliction of Serious Harm to Health” of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, according to which he could face up to a 8-year prison sentence.
Nevertheless, representatives of civil society believe that Emin Ibrahimov might have been falsely accused, due to his “outspoken criticism”. Following the arrest, the diplomat started a 20-day hunger strike, which lasted until August 12th.
